Sophie Tucker: First Lady of Show Business
Published in Paperback by McFarland & Company (08 May, 2003)
Author: Armond Fields
Average review score:

Armond Fields has done it again!
With this wonderful portrait of legendary American entertainer Sophie Tucker, Fields continues his important series of biographies of vaudeville and musical stage legends who came to prominence before World War One. Previous to Sophie Tucker, much needed full-length biographical treatments have been given to the vaudeville comedy act of Weber and Fields, musical stage star Lillian Russell, comedian Eddie Foy, heavyweight boxing champion turned entertainer James J. Corbett, and neglected musical comedy star Fred Stone. At the rate of one per year, with legendary actress Maud Adams next due for the Fields' treatment, one can only marvel at the uniform thoroughness of research and the excellence of each new book from this prolific author.

Sophie Tucker was one of those larger than life entertainers, inimitable and irreplaceable, and the first one of Fields's subjects I can actually remember seeing on television in my teenage years. Such unique entertainers are often difficult to capture with the printed word, but Fields does it, as my own vivid memories of seeing Sophie came back to me. Her triumphant story was unusual- she was a pioneer in many aspects of feminism and its portrayal in various entertainment media in the twentieth century, and Fields conveys it, warts and all, in a way that makes it come alive. Lavishly illustrated with photos, period billboards, and even some of Sophie's hilariously risqué lyrics, this book is a must for anyone interested in fabled American entertainment giants, or in just a plain old superb biographical writing.

A Young Boy Searches for His Origins
One summer day while sitting on the front porch and mulling over bits and pieces of information about himself and his family, eleven year old Patrick Q. Tolson concludes that one of his aunts is, in fact, his mother. This conclusion alarms him since it means that everyone in his family, his two maiden aunts, his Uncle Darius and even Mavis, the cook, has been lying to him for years. No doubt the woman they claimed had given birth to him and then died had, in fact, never existed.

From this day on he uses his talents for eavesdropping to slowly but persistently search for the truth. He hides in trees and hunkers down in the back seats of cars listening and listening until his true origins become clear. When he finally learns the truth he also learns something about love, God and forgiveness.

This gentle tale of a young boy's spiritual journey to his true identity will both charm and amuse readers as they follow Patrick back to his surprising beginnings.

Standards for Our Schools : How to Set Them, Measure Them, and Reach Them
Published in Hardcover by Jossey-Bass (February, 1998)
Authors: Marc S. Tucker and Judy B. Codding
Average review score:

The Future is Now
This is a book about the future of American education - what it could be - what it had better be - if we intend to meet the demands of the kind of global/technological world in which we seem to be living . The authors make a poignant comparison between a typical American high school student who has no idea of his future in terms of professional or occupational aspirations and several young people in Europe and Asia who are preparing for their futures as an important part of their schooling. The contrasts between what we are doing and what some other countries are doing to prepare their youth for the future is stunning and provocative.

The authors demonstrate how a standards based education - one based on national industry skill standards - can provide the focus for many of our youth, regardless of whether they are going to be doctors or plumbers (we ALL go to work after our formal education).

Several convincing examples are given of schools who are successfully implementing a standards-based approach. Many excellent resourses for systemic change are included. A "must read" for anyone interested in improving our educational system.

Still Waters
Published in Paperback by Harper Mass Market Paperbacks (May, 1992)
Author: Kerry Tucker
Average review score:

A standout amid a crowded genre
This is a gem of a mystery in the amateur-female gumshoe field. Tucker has fashioned a solid, engrossing plot, a unique setting (rural and borderline redneck Ohio), a small cast of believable characters, and a strong, distinctive heroine. It's one of the few mysteries I've read that don't overwhelm you with too many red herrings, yet present just enough information to make the puzzle challenging. It even has a great canine character too!

A spiritual classic...
It is very hard to describe this book, but suffice it to say that Wei Wu Wei clearly understood the "negative way" he writes about in this book (part of a series of outstanding books including "Ask The Awakened"by this mysterious mystic).
